Here is a little bit of fairly local (Derbyshire) history. Eyam village has a particularly interesting & Rather macabre story to tell.
In 1665 the second great plague was in full effect. The disease had been brought to the village in a flea-infested bundle of cloth. The plague raged in Eyam village for 16 months and killed at least 260 villagers with only 83 surviving out of a population of 350. Curiously among the survivors were the gravedigger Marshall Howe & Elizabeth Hancock, who never became ill, despite burying her husband & six children in eight days.
