I have lived in Huddersfield almost all my life, but have yet to ascend the tower - because it is almost never open & I quote from Kirklees own website 'The tower was completed in 1899 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign. The corner-stone of the tower was laid on 25 June 1898 by Mr John Frechville Ramsden and was officially opened by the Earl of Scarborough on 24 June 1899. The walls of the tower are four feet thick at the bottom, tapering to two feet at the top. The tower was renovated in 1960 when the top seven feet were removed. It reaches the height of almost 997 feet above sea level. Victoria Tower is open to the public on certain days of the year.' - NO CLEAR INDICATION AS TO WHAT THOSE DAYS ARE...If they are refusing the pub, what about a visitor centre, better still why not open the tower 365 days a year, every day hundreds, sometimes thousands ascend the few steps to get 30 foot higher - but the tower remains closed - what a waste.
*UPDATE 2010 Opening TIMES - Between 12.30 pm and 4.30 pm Easter weekend (3rd, 4th and 5th April 2010), May Day weekend (1st, 2nd & 3rd May 2010) From May Day every weekend until 31st October (Includes 29th, 30th & 31st May and 28, 29, 30 August )History abounds here - AS DO DOGGERS, STONE-THIEVES, & TOURISTS
